Design Taxi recently published an infographic demonstrating the best techniques to employ when engaging in a round of Rock, Paper, Scissors. While the article has some great pointers for the game (men tend to choose Rock for their first throw), the chart itself is a great reminder of everything this design should be.
So what exactly is an infographic? According to Wikipedia, it is a graphic visual representation of information, data or knowledge. Or, in other words, a design utilized to explain complicated information in a simple way. In order to succeed in its purpose, an infographic design must do the following:
Find the narrative – Once the data has been gathered and thoroughly assessed, a story will emerge. Make sure the information presented is compelling and has a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Show Instead of Tell – Typography can be incorporated but should not be the crutch of the chart. Any time a research number is the subject of the graphic, brainstorm on how it can be visualized. Rather than just stating the info, explore the idea of a pie chart, unique bar graph or diagram
Pop with Color – Not only can a great color scheme visually enhance an infographic, it can strategically be used to organize the information or coordinate with other marketing or company materials. One very important item to remember – most charts will be viewed online and should therefore be framed with a palette that is pleasing on a website.
